Dr Reed’s Equine Supplement Formula 2

Pellet Formula

This product contains added selenium at the level of 10 mg/kg.

THESE PELLETS CAN BE FED TO ALL HORSES – all ages, both sexes.

UPDATE AUGUST 2019!

FORMULA 2 PELLETS – BIOTIN added!

Our altered relationship with CFIA necessitates some changes – bagtag name now adds “premix”, ingredients cannot be printed on tag, compliant feeding directions are totally unrelated as to how these pellets are handled in our feeding programs!

NO EXTRA IRON ADDED!

The iron left in our pellets is inherent to other ingredients – mostly dicalcium phosphate.

This is a natural ingredient mined from the earth! As do other producers, we use this as our source for calcium and phosphorus. We have put the ingredients that contribute such “background” iron under the microscope, so to speak, and have decided to leave the balance of our formula unchanged.

Our best advice is to feed pellets twice a day, with good quality forage and fresh water. Hay, the base of a horse’s diet, should be correctly analyzed. Add a non-complete feed like oats, beet pulp or soy hulls if required for extra energy. Owners of metabolically challenged horses note that our low NSC (sugar-starch) value is of little consequence when compared to the dry matter you are feeding!

Directions for use: Feed at 300 grams/day per 454 kg (1000 lbs) body weight.   Approx. 1.5 generous cups.

Measuring Cups: Let’s recycle! Need to feed 300g?
Try using a 398-400ml tin can (Dole pineapple), well rounded – OR – a generous 1.5 cups.

Caution: Directions for use must be carefully followed. Individual results from the use of this product may vary due to the management, environment, genetic, health and sanitation differences.  Therefore D & W Reed Holdings does not warrant or guarantee individual results.

Know your Mathematics

a) The label says Selenium level at 10mg/kg
ie: 1000g of product contains 10 mg of Se
The label says feed 300 gm daily to a 1000lb horse
THEREFORE  you are feeding 300/1000 X 10 = 3 mg/day of Se

b) The label says selenium level at 30mg/kg and feed 100g per day to 1000lb horse
1000g of this product contains 30mg of Se

THEREFORE you are feeding  100/1000 X 30  STILL 3mg/day

You must always relate the stated analysis values to the recommended feeding in order to correctly compare products.

PRODUCT OF CANADA Manufactured/registered by Trouw Nutrition  in Chilliwack BC for D&W Reed Holdings Ltd.

CONCERNED ABOUT NSC?

The NSC (total carbs&sugar) in our product is insignificant relative to that in dry matter eg. Hay

Fed as directed, 1000 lb horse

FORMULA 1 = less than 1 oz NSC daily

FORMULA 2 = 4.5 oz NSC daily

A common hay value - 15% NSC, 2% body weight - 20lbs/day = 3 lbs NSC

A low sugar hay - 12% NSC, 20 Lbs/day = 2.4 lbs NSC

As with human diabetes, carb impact is controlled PER FEEDING.

If you are having metabolic problems, be sure you know the NSC value of your hay! Adjust grain, supplement amount into 2-3 feedings daily

"No Grain" claims imply no starch/low NSC. However byproducts eg "millrun" do contain starch!
